You need to download the following two files and unzip them into the folder you created for VS Code:

churn-mini.csv.zip

churn-mini-model.ipynb.zip

How to Unzip Files

A .zip file is a single compressed file that holds one or more other files inside it. Course materials are distributed this way so that a notebook and its dataset download as one small file. Before you can open a notebook or read a dataset, you have to extract (unzip) it — the files inside a zip are not usable while they are still zipped.

The goal is always the same: end up with the real file (for example churn-mini.csv) sitting in your course folder, next to your notebook.

Windows

1. Open File Explorer and go to your Downloads folder.
2. Right-click the .zip file and choose Extract All…
3. Click Browse and pick the folder you created for VS Code, then click Extract.

Windows lets you double-click a zip and browse inside it without extracting. That preview is not a real folder — if you open a notebook from there, VS Code cannot save your work and Python cannot find the dataset. Always use Extract All… first.

macOS

1. Open Finder and go to your Downloads folder.
2. Double-click the .zip file. macOS extracts it immediately into the same folder, leaving the original .zip behind.
3. Drag the extracted file or folder into the folder you created for VS Code.

Safari may unzip downloads automatically, so you may find the extracted file already waiting for you and no .zip at all.

Command line

If you prefer the terminal, the -d flag says where the contents should go:

# macOS / Linux
unzip churn-mini.csv.zip -d ~/bana409

# Windows PowerShell
Expand-Archive churn-mini.csv.zip -DestinationPath C:\Users\you\bana409

Check your work

After extracting, open the folder in VS Code and confirm you can see the actual file name — churn-mini.csv, not churn-mini.csv.zip. A few things that commonly go wrong:

• The file is still zipped. You browsed inside the zip instead of extracting it. Extract it properly.
• Everything landed in an extra nested folder such as churn-mini/churn-mini/. Move the inner file up so it sits directly in your course folder.
• You see a __MACOSX folder or files starting with ._. These are macOS bookkeeping files. Ignore or delete them; they are not part of the material.
• Your notebook cannot find the dataset. The .csv and the .ipynb must be in the same folder, otherwise pd.read_csv("churn-mini.csv") fails.
